Background of the Study
Depression is a prevalent and debilitating mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, feelings of worthlessness, and disturbances in sleep and appetite. While traditional treatments for depression, such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, have been widely studied and implemented, the role of nutrition in managing depression has garnered increasing attention in recent years (Suleiman & Bello, 2024). Emerging evidence suggests that diet and nutritional intake may have a significant impact on mood regulation, brain chemistry, and overall mental health (Akinola & Yusuf, 2025).
Nutrition affects the brain’s functioning through various mechanisms, including the regulation of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which play a crucial role in mood regulation. Studies have shown that deficiencies in key nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and minerals like magnesium and zinc, are linked to an increased risk of depression (Chinwe & Ibrahim, 2024). Conversely, a diet rich in these nutrients has been shown to have antidepressant effects, improving mood and cognitive function. Given the growing body of evidence supporting the role of nutrition in mental health, it is crucial to examine how nutritional interventions can be incorporated into the management of depression.
The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State provides an ideal setting for evaluating the role of nutrition in managing depression, as it serves a diverse patient population with varying nutritional habits and mental health conditions. However, despite the increasing awareness of nutrition’s role in mental health, few studies have been conducted on the impact of nutrition on depression within Nigerian healthcare settings (Olowale & Nwachukwu, 2023). This study seeks to assess the role of nutrition in the management of depression, focusing on the nutritional interventions provided to patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Depression remains one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, and despite the availability of treatment options, many individuals continue to suffer from the disorder. Traditional treatments, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy, are effective for many individuals, but they do not address the underlying physiological factors that may contribute to the condition (Suleiman & Bello, 2024). Recent research has suggested that nutritional factors may play an important role in managing depression by improving brain function, stabilizing mood, and enhancing overall treatment outcomes.
In Nigeria, the importance of nutrition in managing depression has not been fully explored within clinical settings. The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State provides care for a range of mental health conditions, yet there is a lack of formal nutritional interventions aimed at improving the mental health of individuals with depression. Many patients may not be receiving appropriate dietary counseling or nutritional support, which could complement their existing treatment plans (Akinola & Yusuf, 2025).
This study aims to assess the role of nutrition in the management of depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State, examining the impact of specific nutritional interventions on depression symptoms, treatment adherence, and patient outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the role of nutrition in the management of depression among patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
2. To assess the effectiveness of nutritional interventions in improving the symptoms of depression.
3. To identify the nutritional deficiencies commonly found in patients with depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. How does nutrition play a role in the management of depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State?
2. What nutritional interventions have been found to be effective in managing depression symptoms?
3. What are the most common nutritional deficiencies among patients with depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Nutrition does not significantly improve the management of depression symptoms in patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
2. H₀: Nutritional interventions do not have a significant effect on depression symptom improvement.
3. H₀: There is no significant relationship between nutritional deficiencies and the severity of depression in patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients with depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, who are receiving or have received nutritional interventions. Limitations include the potential variability in the nutritional status of patients and the subjective nature of measuring depression symptoms.
